History of the Cross of Burgundy
Because Saint Andrew was the patron saint of Burgundy , the Cross of Burgundy was the emblem used by the troops of John the Fearless in the Hundred Years' War . After María de Borgoña married Maximilian I of Habsburg , her eldest son, Felipe, called "el Hermoso", married Juana I of Castile , called "la Loca", becoming Felipe I of Castile .
Felipe displayed the Cross or Aspa of Burgundy on the uniforms and flags of his entourage. Then it was inherited and expressly adopted by his son, Carlos I of Spain and V of the Holy Roman Empire , the result of that marriage of Felipe with Juana I of Castile.
The Cross of Burgundy in Spain
The Cross of Burgundy has been included in the coats of arms and in the flags of Spain , both on land and at sea, since 1506 , the time of its introduction with the Burgundian Guard of Felipe el Hermoso . Although it disappeared from the Coat of Arms of the King of Spain in the reign of Felipe VI and from his banner , 1 many current flags, scripts and banners of the Spanish Army continue to feature this emblem on them. A clear example is the scripts and banners of the Royal Guard .
The Cross of Burgundy is the origin of the tail badge that marks the tails of the planes of the Spanish Air Force , 2 and of the Aeromobile Forces of the Army .
As a vexillological symbol, it has been the most used until 1785 on Spanish flags.
On land, this flag, white with the cross of Burgundy in red, flew perhaps for the first time as a Spanish insignia at the Battle of Pavia in 1525 (although the red blades were smooth, without knots), and is the most characteristic of those used by the Spanish tercios and infantry regiments of the Hispanic Monarchy during the 16th , 17th , 18th and early 19th centuries.
Since Carlos I , each company has had its own flag, in which the cross appeared on backgrounds of very different shapes and colors (which sometimes included hieroglyphics or heraldic motifs of the commanding officer). When Felipe II acceded to the throne, he ordered that, in addition to the flags of each company, each tercio carry another yellow flag with the blades of Burgundy in red. Despite this variety, the white color was the most used as background cloth, especially in coronelas flags. In this regard, a decree of Felipe V given on February 28, 1707 said:
And it is my will that each corps bring a white colonel flag with the Burgundian cross, according to the style of my troops, to which I have ordered two castles and two lions added, divided into four targets, and four crowns that close the tips of the blades. .
On the high seas, the flags with the Burgundy blades have been used as tortillas and as flags of the Navy and the Merchant Navy .
It was also the "viceregal banner" in the viceroyalties of New Spain . 3
During the Spanish-American revolutions, the Ecuadorian patriots of the First Autonomous Government Junta of Quito used a flag of gules (red) with the cross of Burgundy charged in silver (white), as an affirmation of the past and as a historical continuity of the Indian Kingdoms. after the fracture of the Spanish Monarchy by the Napoleonic invasion. This flag is known as the "flag of August 10, 1809".
Today many American flags recall in their design the Cross of Burgundy and its Spanish past, such as the flag of the city of Valdivia , Chile , the flag of the department of Chuquisaca in Bolivia , or those of the US states of Florida and Alabama . . The flag flies over Castillo San Felipe del Morro and Fort San Cristóbal in San Juan , Puerto Rico . Last but not least, the flag of the 1st Infantry Regiment "Patricios" of the Argentine Army , from 1807 to the present day.
