Spain's National Holiday Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus to the Americas in 1492 to the "New World" thus marking the discovery of America.
The navigator Christopher Columbus reached a historical milestone in 1492 with the discovery of America, a fact that represented the first contact between two worlds, with different languages and cultures.
Currently, the commemoration of the conquest of America itself is left aside, to give way to an analysis and appreciation of the immense variety of cultures that it has contributed and that make up the Hispanic identity.
It was the former Spanish minister, Faustino Rodríguez-San Pedro, who launched an initiative in 1913 to create an act that would serve to twin Spain with the Ibero-American nations.
